A. General
1. What does this platform provide?
Ans.: HKEdCity's English Campus has developed this online, self-access English learning platform for secondary school students. We use TVB Pearl's local English news to design online News Practice exercises on vocabulary and listening. We have also set up a News Archive housing all TVB Pearl's local English news clips and a forum for students to discuss Hong Kong's social issues with their peers.

For News Practice, school application is needed. For details, please go to Demo Exercises. Awards Schemes are introduced to encourage students to participate more and get higher scores in the exercises and quizzes.
For News Archive and Student Forum, Student and Teacher Accounts at HKEdCity are needed. For details, please go to here.

2. How to join?
Ans.: For News Practice, school application and a school account at HKEdCity are needed. Please click here to apply. To apply for a school account, please go to Join Us. Because of limited resources, there is a quota for school application. Priority will be given to those schools who commit more classes with students who can complete more exercises.

For News Archive, Student and Teacher Accounts at HKEdCity are needed. To apply for accounts, please go to Join Us. There is no limit to the number of archive and forum users.

3. Any subscription fee?
Ans.: No! No subscription fee is required.

4. Which level is the TVnews program for?
Ans.: The student target of TVnews is Secondary Three or above.

5. How much of TVnews would be adaptable for junior secondary students (F.1-3)?
Ans.: Some lower form students are able to complete the News quizzes. English teachers would know best which students have sufficient English skills to benefit from such a challenge.

6. How long would a student be expected to take to complete all the TVnews activities in one week?
Ans.: Students should take 30 - 45 minutes to finish all sections of each News Practice. The time limit for students to finish a News Quiz is 25 minutes. It is estimated that a student will need 60 - 70 minutes to finish all TVnews activities in a week.

7. Please clarify which Tasks or Quizzes are included in the scoring scheme.
Ans.: Records of 'vocabulary','listening exercise' and 'My learning log' of each News Practice and all News Quizzes will be found in each student's 'My Profile' and teacher's reports. Finishing the 'Watch' section of News Practice and News Quizzes will be included in the scoring scheme. (Please also see question no.1 of 'More on submission percentage')

2. Is it possible to take on more than 100 schools for the TVnews program?

C. More on submission percentage
1. There are different sections in News Practice, such as 'Before you watch', 'Watch', 'After watching' and 'My Learning Log'. Should all sections be finished to count as finishing one News Practice?
Ans.: Finishing the 'Watch' of a News Practice will be counted as finishing one News Practice.

2. My school has four Form 4 classes and they are split into five groups for English. Can some of these groups join TVnews 07/08? How will the submission percentage of these Form 4 students count?
Ans.: A new function for putting students into groups rather classes has been added to TVnews 07/08. The submission percentage of exercises for these students will be based on their groups rather than classes at school.

3. How can you ensure that schools honour what they have promised in terms of percentage of exercises and quizzes to be finished?
Ans.: We will send Principals and English Panel Heads bi-monthly reports with their school's performance. We will also contact any schools whose actual submission percentage is significantly behind the initial target to find out reasons and solutions for attaining the target.

Ans.:

For students, please consult your school's IT coordinator to reset your password at the school account admin page.

E. Technical issues
1. What are the basic requirements of our school's computer system for TVnews?
Ans.: Please note if your system meets all requirements:
(i) Internet Explorer
(ii) Windows Media Player 9 or above
(iii) Flash Player 8
(iv) a headset with mic or PC with mic

2. Our school is using Window Media Player 9 but we can't view the videos at school. Why?
Ans.:

Sometimes your school's firewall may be blocking certain ports for videos. Please consult your school's IT coordinator or follow these steps:

Windows Media Services 9 Series uses two streaming media protocols to deliver content as a unicast stream to clients:

  • Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) (for Windows Media Player Series 9 or above)
  • Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol (for old version of windows media player)

You need to open this port in firewall to accept outgoing connections:

RTSP TCP 554 (Out)
MMS TCP 554 (Out)
